Calling out or calling in -communication skills for allies
"Perhaps the most important role an ally can play is that of a bridge or buffer – a point of connection or safety zone between groups of humans that are on opposite sides of a battle."
- Jenn Wilson
Despite a lifetime of experience as an activist, advocate and consultant in inclusion and equity, I still sometimes make mistakes that hurt people.
As a person who is sometimes pushed to the margins myself because of my queerness and neurodivergence, I know that imperfect allies make a difference. Change doesn't come from people who don't care, or who tick boxes and say the right words but don't take action.
Allyship is about doing the work: unlearning your privilege, taking steps to learn and holding yourself accountable when you (inevitably) mess up.
I continue to be an imperfect ally and to support purpose-driven people into allyship.
I draw on my lived experience, my training in restorative justice and my consent-led practices to create judgement-free spaces where people feel safe to explore, ask questions, mess up and learn to do better next time.
Your one-to-one space with Jenn Wilson to explore your questions, challenges and intentions for inclusion and allyship.

Help with communication, defensiveness, fear of mistakes or calling out/in
I, like many people I think, need time and nuanced discussion to grapple with concepts and ideas that are new or different to how I’ve previously seen the world. I needed a non judgmental space to clarify my thinking. Jenn was the person for the job! They actively listened, were empathic, gently challenged, provided info and context where needed and helped me move my thinking on. HIGHLY recommended.” Sylvie
